Symposium on Eastern European Cinema

One Day Symposium on Eastern European Cinema
Friday 16 September 2011, starting at 1030
Showroom Cinema (Cinema No. 5), 7 Paternoster Row, Sheffield S1 2BX, South Yorkshire, UK.

The Network of Eastern European Film Scholars in the UK (NEEFSUK) is holding its first symposium and scholars are invited to send proposals for papers. This first symposium is not themed and is open to any contribution on the topic of Eastern European cinema, whether it be contemporary, historical, industrial, questions of spectatorship, gender or minority issues, transnationalism, theoretical approaches or whatever.
For the purpose of the symposium, Eastern Europe is defined as: The Baltic states; Poland; Slovakia; Czech Republic; Hungary, Romania; Bulgaria; Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina; Serbia, Montenegro; Macedonia; Albania and Ukraine.
Please send a 250 word proposal to the organiser, John Cunningham (j.cunningham@shu.ac.uk). Presenters should aim for a 20 minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion. The proposals will be discussed by a team of scholars drawn from the Editorial Board of the journal Studies in Eastern European Cinema which is also sponsoring the symposium.
The deadline for proposals is 20 May and the successful proposers will be informed as soon as possible after this date.

The usual projection facilities are available although presenters should bring their own laptops if necessary. The Showroom Cinema is very near the city centre and just a few minutes walk from the Railway Station and main bus station. Unfortunately, due to the current economic climate a midday meal cannot be provided, there are however a number of eating places nearby. Tea and coffee available from 1000. Start at 1030 and presentations will finish at 1700 when, after a break, there will be a screening (details to be decided). Tea and coffee will be provided during the afternoon break. It is not possible to help with travel expenses, those scholars who need this should apply to their own institutions for support. Scholars from outside the UK are very welcome to attend and submit proposals. Anyone requiring information about overnight accommodation, please contact John Cunningham who will try and help.
There will be a charge of Ł8 for anyone attending the symposium, Ł6 for those who are unemployed or in full-time education (post-grad/under-grad). If any sponsorship or financial support can be procured this might be reduced.
