„Movies and Emotions: Between Real and Hypothetical Spectators”
Most film critics and scholars agree that the effectiveness of movies in eliciting emotions is key to their rhetorical power and an important element of their aesthetic design. In this talk Carl Plantinga will discuss the methodological problems faced in attempting to understand emotional responses to films. He will outline various approaches to measuring, estimating, and/or predicting audience response, and whether it is possible to dispense with hypothetical models of the spectator in favor of studies of real or actual spectators. He will discuss intuitive „folk psychology” and its place in studies of spectatorship. And he will relate these issues to the „cognitive-perceptual” approach he takes in his recent book, Moving Viewers: American Film and the Spectator’s Experience.
Carl Plantinga a Calvin College (Grand Rapids, Mitchigan, USA) filmtudomány professzora, a Kognitív Filmtudományi Társaság (Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image) elnöke és a Projections: The Journal for Movies and Mind című filmtudományi folyóirat szerkesztője.
